“We were stunned by Cuba’s beauty and energy of people. Elizabeth Schub explored coming-of-age stories, and one day a lecturer at Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión en San Antonio de los Baños told us about the quinceañera celebration. We were intrigued by a high-society tradition made popular by Socialists. When we found Tzunami, we forgot about the idea of multiple characters. Later, a New York critic called her “cinematic animal.” With just 55min shot in two days, we ended up with a treasure. Arguably, it may be one of the most successful short films of the year. Tzunami left Cuba after university, got married, and had a daughter.” —Pedro Valiente
Cuba 15 was presented for the first time ever to an audience of international artists right before its world premiere at The Hamptons International Film Festival in New York where it won Best Short Film Award. The preview took place in The Hamptons too. It was a special screening at The Watermill Center by Robert Wilson. Then, Cuba 15 won Best Short Film Jury Award and Best Short Film Audience Award in Berlinale (Panorama), received an Emmy Award Nomination, and National Geographic and Kodak Awards. It was official selection at Sundance, SXSW, and 40+ film festivals gathering over a dozen of international awards. Cuba 15 aired on POV (PBS) in the US, and Canal+ in France and Spain. New York and L.A. critics praised the film. Metro Goldwin Mayer started a project with the director. Bloomberg TV in New York featured the producer. I IMDb

FROM THE WRITERS “Development for Olvidadizo began in October 2015 when the director, Arturo Alanis, together with the producer and director of photography, Konstantin Lyubimov, started working on the story and went through 14 drafts of the script within one month. During this time, Pedro Valiente joined the project as a producer and started working on pre-production in Spain along with Nadia Zúñiga, the casting director. A top notch crew was assembled bringing people together from the US, Spain, Russia, Mexico, Turkey, Greece, India, Guatemala, and Ukraine to work together on the film.
The crew of twenty five people mainly comprised of students from New York University, as well as three professional crew members from Russia, flew into Spain over the first two weeks of 2016. Principal photography began on January 10th. Olvidadizo was shot in S’Agaro, Spain and its surroundings over the course of ten days. The cast, made up of talented Spanish actors such as Ana Torrent, Gal Soler and Jorge-Yamam Serrano to name a few, worked hand in hand with the crew shooting on boats, beaches, a church, windy walkways, a rock staircase, streets, a funeral home, and other challenging locations. The film was edited in New York […] to kick off its festival run on 2017.” —Arturo Alanis / Konstantin Lyubimov

FROM THE FILM "My name is Manuel Gameros. I made to build my house in 1907. It was finished three years later. Then, the Mexican Revolution exploded, and it was confiscated. Pancho Villa and the chief of the army, Venustiano Carranza, managed to reside in the house. I had to escape to the United States with my wife and daughter. We never lived in the house. I have often wondered how was the life of the ones who inhabited the house in the following years. They appear in my dreams as presences. Or, maybe, as memories that never existed."

“Cuba 15, directed by Elizabeth Schub with a kind of magical shaggy formality, follows voluble and self possessed Tzunami Ortega Coyra as she prepares and celebrates for her quinceañera. In a few telling strokes it sketches not only the life of one girl (her family, friends, and ill-fated love interest) but of the poor Cuban small town that she calls home and would no trade for any other, and concludes with a lovely dance where Tzunami dances in the streets, fields, and beneath a mural of Che.
