PROGRAM I "BA (Hons) Contemporary Media Practice, a new cutting-edge degree, is set as a hands-on program with focus on creativity and production, ranging from film, television and new media to the performing and visual arts. This program primes a new generation of contemporary media artists to meet the growing international need for innovative audiovisual content. Combining digital and broadcast media with the practical training necessary to harness new and emerging types of technology, this unique degree equips you with the practical and creative skills necessary to create innovative, multi-platform content that is suitable for use in everything from advertising and television broadcasting to feature film or even transmedia projects. This contemporary program encourages you to create for a global audience from day one. At first, you engage with the local community, industry and environment of Britain’s Ocean City, before positioning your work within an international context. This diverse, multicultural focus will prepare you to carve out a successful and sustainable career in an industry where a smartphone alone can enable your ideas to reach a global audience." —Pedro Valiente I Photo: (1) PV (2/3) © AUP I TEXT for AUP I AUP
PROGRAM I BA (Hons) Contemporary Media Practice was born as a new program in addition to existing pathways on film, animation, videogames, design, arts, and crafts. Later, BA (Hons) Contemporary Media Practice was re-named BA (Hons) Digital Media, and it was finally divided into BA (Hons) Creative Technologies and BA (Hons) Sound Arts. I UNIVERSITY Founded in 1856, Plymouth College of Art is one of the first arts schools in the UK. Considered a leading educational reference in the Southwest, it navigated successfully the process for being acredited in 2022 as Arts University Plymouth. I Photo: PV I BA CMP Site

CONTEMPORARY MEDIA I “It’s the destruction of the real. It’s a perfect crime that involves the destruction of the real. In words of Jean Baudrillard, guru of French postmodern theory, who claims that it happens for denying a transcendent reality in contemporary media and technological society.
Denying affirming other realities –digital reality, virtual reality. Current media integrating traditional (radio, television, film) and new (online). A technological society “witnessing the evolution of a universal interconnected network of audio, video, and electronic text communications that will blur the distinction between interpersonal and mass communication and between public and private communication."
Today, news come mostly from the website and television. We send messages to friends instead of calling them. And forget about table games with the family, now it’s time to hunt monsters in an interactive game. The thought-provoking side for media makers is that people receive a variety of inputs with more audiovisual information than ever before in history. A shift from a vocal society to a textual society to a visual society. […]
Picasso said that art is the elimination of the unnecessary. By the contrary, in global times people are bombarded by bits of data –from messages to images– that seem to be essential for any type of living. It builds a fragmented perception of reality that has an impact on reality itself. Present-day men and women are not one world/planet in themselves. We’re satellites floating around other satellites floating around other satellites.” —Pedro Valiente I Photo: AUP students work on public screen in Plymouth: PV
